Medical students Sophie and Anne discuss the stigma and isolation of falling behind during medical school and the power of support, friendship, and community.
Inspired to help others going through a similar situation, Sophie started the Student Support Network at the Indiana University School of Medicine. The purpose of this registered student organization is to support the well-being and academic achievement for students who experience difficulty in medical education by providing social support, educational resources and advice. Their goal is to also provide students with information and access to school resources and knowledge for success in future clinical years as repeating and remediating students. The organization is dedicated to retention and success of students who face difficulty throughout medical school.
The organization also exists to advocate for the Student Support Network students to administration, through proposing methodologies to better reinforce student success, by bringing greater transparency about repeating and remediation and their administrative processes, revealing and reducing patterns associated with types of students who repeat, and providing student perspective on repeating a school year and remediating a course to administration.
If you or someone you know would like to join the SSN or would like to be a mentor/advisor to a student, please contact the Student Support Network at ssnsig@iupui.edu.
